CyberDating ~ Free Dating and Relationship Advice!

Article Summary: Where not to go on a first date

Even an absolute novice at Google can find a billion articles on what to do on a first date. But, what about things not to do on your first date? Here, the webmaster at CyberDating gives us a look at the other half of the equation.

Where not to go on a first date

So, you’ve finally settled on a time for your first date. Nice - way to go!

Now, in addition to getting your hair coiffed, your teeth brushed and your outfit ready, you are going to have to settle on what to do on your date. I’m sure you have tons of good ideas of first date fare but here are a few that are definite no-no’s.

  1. The movies.
I know, going to the movies is supposed to be one of the traditional good first date ideas. But think about it. How the heck are you supposed to get to know someone when you have to sit there in the dark without talking. Granted, going to the movies on a third or fourth date is a fine idea - by then you’ll probably know each other well enough to hold hands - etc.
  2. A museum or cultural event.
Of course you want your date to

...and you end up looking just plain dumb

think you are worldly and sophisticated, so a cultural event is a great place to show that off. Well, that is assuming you both have similar interests in the culture or history. There is not much worse than standing in a museum while your partner reads all the little plaques while you want to run to the next exhibit before the guy with the camera gets there. Or even worse, your date did his/her graduate thesis on the culture and you end up looking just plain dumb. Go for a little less "high brow" until you know your date a bit better. There will be time later to expose your ignorance.
  3. Participating in a sport.
Let’s clarify: a sport involves sweating, grunting, competitiveness and general aggressiveness. Do I really have to tell you why these are not good things to do on a first date? "Gee he was so cute when he slammed me into the boards - I think I’m in love."
  4. A family affair.
OK, remember in my introductory paragraph where I mentioned coiffing, brushing and being nicely dressed? Now think about getting the whole family to do that on the same day - at the same time. And, supposing you can get dear old Gramps to brush his teeth, do you think you can get him not to emit any bodily noises for a whole hour or two? I thought not. Best you limit your first date to just the two of you.
  5. A bar.
Sure you met in a bar so going to a bar on the first date makes sense. Right? Not usually. Sometimes a bar is OK but nine times out of ten a bar is loud and congested. How are you going to figure out if your date’s favorite color is teal if you can’t hear the answer? Oh, and remember how you picked up your date in a bar? Well as soon as you go to the bathroom some goof is going to be hitting on your date. How long can you hold it? Better not have another beer.

I think you can read between the lines here folks. For your first date choose a place where the two of you can be alone to get to know each other. Really the venue doesn’t matter as long as it’s stress free and is going to give you something to talk about if there are any long pauses...

Good luck with that. Tucker
